How To Prepare Your Newborn Baby’s Bed In 8 Simple Steps

Babies usually like sleeping in a Moses basket or crib for the first few weeks, as it’s normally cosier and warmer than a spacious cot. You can also keep the basket in your bedroom to help with bonding and late night feeds. Just follow this 8-step guide and you’ll have the bed made up in no time.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • Moses basket or crib
  • Basket inner liner
  • Basket hood
  • Waterproof mattress
  • Elasticated mattress cover
  • Thin breathable blanket
  • Sleeping bag/pod (optional)
  • Rocking stand (optional)

6. PLACE BLANKETS IN BASKET

Only use thin breathable blankets or a baby sleeping bag/pod. Do not use quilts or pillows. This is recommended by the Foundation of the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID).

7. PULL HOOD UP

The hood can help to shield bright light or drafts, but it’s mainly there for aesthetic purposes i.e. to look pretty.

8. PLACE BASKET ON STAND

Place the basket on a stand. This will ease the strain on your back. Your baby may also find the rocking motion calming when they wake up and wriggle around.
